How to Set Up the Technology Center of Math Workshop

The Technology Center of middle school math workshop is exactly what it sounds like… a chance to incorporate technology into your daily math workshop centers. What you use during this time is largely dependent on what you have available at your school. Chromebooks and iPads is typically what I have used in the past.

The Technology Center is probably the most flexible center in my math workshop structure. A few days each week, I will often check out 6 iPads from our school IMC for students to use. On the iPads, they can choose a math app from a list I give to them. There are a lot of great math apps and all of mine are sorted into three broad categories...Logic, Visual Reasoning, and Strategic Planning.

If using Chromebooks, there are also some outstanding sites and resources out there to use. I have used the free Khan Academy videos and practice problems, as well as the paid IXL program before. Both are great! In Khan Academy and IXL, I like being able to track the work and time spent by each student in concepts.

This can also be a time to let students play online math games. I will typically give them a specific site that they should be using, so it is a little more focused for them.

Again, the key with this center is to figure out what your school has available and spend a little time researching a few sites, games, or activities your students can use on those devices during this time.
